New Year’s Resolution

As we approach the New Year we see a range of emotions and actions from people across the globe. Some are happy, some are sad, some will party, some will stay in. Unfortunately, both the happy and sad are being negatively affected by the societal expectations, the culture and traditions. These traditions are in essence influencing our psychology (mind and behavior) in one way or another. The most common posts or reminders we may be seeing during these days are motivational and some will begin to think or list their New Year’s resolutions. In this regard, I wrote a poem (see below) many years ago which I hope will be of benefit, encouragement and motivation to blossom for all who may read it.

new year’s resolution…

what is the new year
except another day
yet many disagree and say
it’s a time to start fresh, from scratch
so i say, let’s detach
ourselves from our bad habits
and do that which benefits

a resolution, another solution with constant evolution
it’s a new thing

be sincere
smile from the heart
don’t be fake
there’s too much at stake
have to escape
the corruption and hate
the blind imitate-ing
and do a new thing

be kind
a heart can be harder than a rock
let’s step outside of our box
break the locks
take the chain off our hearts
limiting our senses
have a fresh start

be intelligent
let’s not be narrow minded
or blinded
remove the tube from our eyes
limited vision
inhibits positive decisions

be honest
lies, slander, gossip and rumors
are worse than tumors
growing in the head
like a cancer without an end
that the recipient can’t defend
unaware of what is being said

if we say it’s not just another day
so why not change our old way
if we can’t do this then what is the new year
contrary to much dismay
except another day

the words that i think, that i say,
that i write, that i type
i hope are not just a hype
a phase for a day
gone until May
but if they blossom
that’s ok

a new year is here and it appears to be a mere
day of shallow cheer
we shed no tears
we don’t fear
the systematic loss of compassion
which soon will disappear
it’s unclear

our hearts are pumping
our brains function
but a deaf ear

our eyes are open
but we refuse to see

let’s change gear, or steer
this tunnel vision
that’s confounding our decision
to make a living
judging others
before the dust settles

let’s make a resolution, another solution an evolution
of the mind and heart

if we can’t do this then, what is the new year
contrary to much dismay
except another day
